Does anyone know the answer to this question from a colleague?
Fred, I am trying to track down the source of a quotation form Marx; are there some active forums where people who would know such things are likely to be found? The quote is from a speech by Edward and Eleanor Marx Aveling, entitled "Shelley's Socialism." In it, they say, As Marx, who understood the poets as well as he understood the philosophers and economists, was wont to say: "The real difference between Byron and Shelley is this: those who understand them and love them rejoice that Byron died at thirty-six, because if he had lived he would have become a reactionary bourgeois; they grieve that Shelley died at twenty-nine, because he was essentially a revolutionist, and he would always have been one of the advanced guard of Socialism." As far as I can tell, this talk is the only place that this thing which Marx was "wont to say" is actually written down, but I'd like to be sure there isn't a primary source for the quote. ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
