The other thing to remember here is that the rich are paranoid that given massive projected deficits the only way the Democrats will avoid default in the future will be through much higher marginal rates. So through the Tea Party the rich are trying to stop the country from going down a slippery slope. They are trying to whip up hysteria against any kind of tax, and don't believe for a second that the Democrats would or could stop with a closing of loopholes and return to the Clinton rates as long as they are serving their constituencies. The Democrats are saying that without any new revenue everyone will be poorer than they would otherwise be, given the long-term effects of cuts in education and infrastructure. But for many of America's rich that is the lesser risk than the slippery slope of new taxation. So the rich need to destroy the Democratic Party through the Tea Party, and the Democrats will have to split the Republican Party to crush the Tea Party. Of course if there is a second recession, politics will leave the talking or shouting houses.
