I have first-hand experience of this. I once listened in awe as a hedge fund honcho in Greenwich argued to me, sometime around 2005, that all the economic action in the U.S. was among the rich in the big cities. He said, twice, "I don't give a shit about the guy living in a trailer court in Alabama." He was heavily leveraged on the idea that the U.S. economy was about to take off into a mega-boom. It didn't and his fund went bust. It was almost enough to make me believe there's a just god. By the way, there are plenty of Asians, East and South, in the hedge fund world too.
