yesterday and today, the semi-official US media have been going on and
on about the alleged Iranian plot to kill the Saudi ambassador to the
US. There is more talk about sanctions against Iran, of course (since
they've worked so well in the past to dislodge the Ahmadinejad
government without having any negative impact on the Iranian people
;-) ).

One thing notable is the older issue of the hikers who were (to my
mind, unfairly) jailed in Iran for their (idiotic) crossing of the
border into Iran. What's interesting is that even though the two
recently-freed prisoners complained about their ill-treatment in
Iranian jails, the US government and media let the issue drop. I'd
guess it's because the Iranians treated them pretty well by today's
standards. US prisoners (in Guantanamo, etc.) have suffered from much
worse -- and a lot of people in high positions recognize that fact. So
the US officialdom doesn't want to dwell on that issue. Of course the
hikers don't have anything close to the clout that the Saudis do.
