I don't know if mindless is the right word, but I would say that 
any trade unionist who rings doorbells for Obama is wasting his or 
her time.

The conditions are rotten-ripe for a break with the 2-party system 
and the AFL-CIO's efforts on behalf of Obama are best described as 
an anagram of the word above: a brake.
