** [image: Description: https://secure.citizen.org/images/public-citizen-email-banner.jpg]**** Who runs the World Bank is a big deal. The World Bank is the most important economic development institution in the world. Policy choices at the Bank commonly have more impact on people in developing countries than do the decisions of those countries’ governments. Although the Bank serves poor countries around the world, the United States traditionally picks the Bank’s president, and has always appointed an American to the post. *Tell President Obama not to nominate Larry Summers to head the World Bank.* Add your name to our “Forget Larry” petition to President Obama.<http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=-1&url_num=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fforgetlarry.org%2F> This is the Larry Summers who as Treasury Secretary in the Clinton administration helped spearhead the deregulatory spree that precipitated the financial crash of 2008 and the Great Recession. This is the Larry Summers who as chief economist at the World Bank wrote in a leaked memo, “I’ve always thought that under-populated countries in Africa are vastly under-polluted.” (Summers later claimed he was being sarcastic, but he’s never actually explained how he disagrees with the memo’s logic.) This is the Larry Summers who as president of Harvard University provoked a firestorm with comments suggesting that “issues of intrinsic aptitude” may be why relatively few women have tenured positions in science and engineering. This is the Larry Summers who has “a long history of arrogance and relative ignorance about poor people’s culture and working people’s culture” in the estimation of scholar Cornel West. *Does Larry Summers sound like a person with the policy preferences and skill set to lead an institution meant to empower the world’s poorest and most marginalized citizens?* Sign our petition at forgetlarry.org urging President Obama not to appoint Larry Summers as president of the World Bank.<http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=-1&url_num=2&url=http%3A%2F%2Fforgetlarry.org%2F> President Obama is supposed to announce his nominee by the end of this week, so sign the petition right now. The World Bank is intended to serve people in developing countries. The world deserves better than Larry Summers.**** [image: Description: photograph of Robert Weissman]**** Onward, [image: Description: Robert Weissman's signature] Robert Weissman President, Public Citizen**** P.S. There’s far more to be said about how deeply flawed the World Bank is, but for the moment, we need to focus on keeping Larry Summers from being in charge of it, because he certainly won’t make it any better.**** Go to http://action.citizen.org/unsubscribe.jsp<http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=-1&url_num=3&url=http%3A%2F%2Faction.citizen.org%2Funsubscribe.jsp>if you do not want to receive future emails from Public Citizen. **** © 2012 Public Citizen • 1600 20th Street, NW / Washington, D.C. 20009 • www.citizen.org<http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=-1&url_num=4&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.citizen.org%2F> **** **** ** ** ** ** -- Robert Naiman Policy Director Just Foreign Policy www.justforeignpolicy.org [email protected]
