Michael Perelman: The 1% slogan is good, but it will not amount to much unless the discussion eventually goes farther.
------- Michael, this is merely a truism, applicable to _any_ slogan, including those that made the Russian Revolution. Of course thinking has to develop within a mass movement -- and it is only within a mass movement that "ideas can seize the masses" and become a material force. And actually, the 1% metaphor catches more of empirical reality than many slogans or metaphors do. Organizing is always local, and in any given locality, those 'in charge,' the oppressors, _feel_ like a very tiny minority indeed, and the 1% catches that feeling -- and I doubt very much that it will ever confuse anyone. I guess it takes a trained economist to take numbers literally.
