I don't have with me at home Brenner's brilliant piece on the logic of
institutions in Analytical Marxism, Roemer.
Again I think he gives a better explanation as for why growth through
technological change depends on determinate institutions in the absence of
which you can get at best short-lived extensive growth or what A and R call
extractive growth (as I said, I think the claim is exaggerated) .At any
rate,  I think Brenner provides the logic for  A and R's claims better than
they do themselves (to say it again: Brenner's argument is brilliant); they
do acknowledge him, but I think that they had more to learn from him.
That said, IIRC, Brenner is not simply talking about European feudalism or
serfdom but rather in general about tributary relations backed directly by
extra-economic coercion and secured outside the marketplace. Again IIRC.
