what makes a tributary mode of production different from feudalism is that feudalism involves competitive relations among lords (on both the economic and military levels), while a tributary system is more bureaucratic. These are pure cases, of course, since (for example) China's empire fell apart every few centuries, leading to intense competition among warlords, etc. By the way, we have to be careful. There's one person on pen-l who thinks that Brenner is an Evil Person. -- Jim Devine / If you're going to support the lesser of two evils, you should at least know the nature of that evil. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
