what makes a tributary mode of production different from feudalism is
that feudalism involves competitive relations among lords (on both the
economic and military levels), while a tributary system is more
bureaucratic. These are pure cases, of course, since (for example)
China's empire fell apart every few centuries, leading to intense
competition among warlords, etc.

By the way, we have to be careful. There's one person on pen-l who
thinks that Brenner is an Evil Person.
