I was wise enough to ask Doug for his take on the numbers. It is amazing that
the same errors keep on being made about the BLS estimates. And how conspiracy
thinking abounds. Didn't Nixon want to investigate the BLS because he thought
there were too many Jews there, and they wanted to do him in? It is amusing to
watch the folks at Fox talk about how so many people have dropped out of the
labor force. It isn't hard to imagine how they would be talking about these
folks as lazy and shiftless if ,say, Bush were president. The screamers at
MSNBC, of course, say that things are really looking up, thanks to Obama.
