Yeah, historically that was my attitude to suburbs as well, based on
my experience growing up in Republican Dupage County, west of Chicago.

But not all "suburbs" are like that. In particular, some of the
near-in Maryland suburbs of DC are quite liberal. Montgomery County,
for example, recently shelved a proposal to become a sister city with
an Israeli city because of community concerns about racism and
discrimination in Israel. Takoma Park in particular has a reputation
for being an artsy, politically minded place. Whenever there is a
national push to get local communities to pass a resolution against
war X, it goes something like: Berkeley, Oakland, Takoma Park...

Maybe there should be one of them guides: "Best American suburbs for
Communists to live in." ;) Of course, every place is a great place for
Communists to live from the point of view of having stuff to work on.
But some places are better than others in terms of what you can take
for granted as your starting point.
