It's always gratifying to be a bringer of clarity. 

Robert lives in a strange world. The 'ultraleft', for him, is anybody 
uninterested in parsing minuscule -- if not illusory -- differences
among Democrats. By the same token, 'practical political activity' 
consists of -- what? Voting in primaries? Writing to your Congressman? 

By Robert's standards, most of the country is 'ultraleft'. This is 
cheering: who knew? Perhaps there's hope for us yet.
