I don't see Fernando's post on the archives. So forgive me for quoting him through Jim. I already know it is irrational to view some individuals as gods and turn their remains or things into fetishes. I'm pretty sure a large percentage of people on this list also knows this. My point is that short of Fernando going and educating the Venezuelan masses (and the "actually-existing" leaders they have) and convincing them that it's irrational, absurd, silly, etc. to preserve Chávez's body, his words are not particularly helpful. Not only that (not only it is, as I said, lame to complain about it and dwell on it), but more importantly it contributes to our elitist alienation from the oppressed, viewing them as a vulgar mass beyond human redemption. This is part of the problem. I'm fine complaining about the vulgarity of the rich (examples abound, and these complaints are part of our class struggle to bring them down), but I'm not impressed by complaints about how ignorant or crass the lower classes are. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
