The text I had in my youth was: Russell Keat & John Urry, Social theory as science (1975).
It had quite a few critical remarks about role theory in it. But I thought there would be somebody who had done this much more comprehensively. In fact I am sure somebody has, but looks like I am going to have to dig it out. J.
