Thanks for all the great responses.  You know who you are.  Each, alone, was 
what I hoped for.

I agree with Chuck Grimes about a student possibly turned off by the arcane 
terminology.  And with his remark about having a job.  I was lucky to have 
early jobs where older workers not only taught about doing the work but about 
protecting each other and, ... because it was in their faces, Taft-Hartley.  
But we can learn from good jobs and bad jobs.

All the reading ideas appealed to me.  I could have spent the weekend reading 
Julio's suggestion, How Man Became a Giant.  I will read that one, it appealed 
to my inner middle-schooler.

I just hope my friend isn't overwhelmed and can choose and take in what he 
needs now and goes on later.
