There are no theoretical foundations in the sense that we would think of them. Of course, there are always theoretical assumptions, but Piketty is not explicit in thinking about them or declaring them. Except he's no Marxist. Fun fact: his parents were Trots in the 1970s (LO, to be precise), but then went back to the land and became goatherds. As someone on my FB page said, having parents in LO might be enough to make one Marxphobic as an adult.
