In our never ending quest to deliver fine education, the California State
University system is now requiring departments to develop a method of
assessment that will allow our schools to compare our students' performance
with those of other universities. Would you know it? Going to have to be giving
our students multiple choice tests of very dubious quality. I recall one
question having to do with an increase in government spending, which caused all
but one of the following outcomes. One was inflation and another was a fall in
the gross domestic product. I forget the others. I suspect that we will
eventually have to teach to the test.

I have a good friend who used to be active on the list who was working on a PhD
program in accounting on top of his earlier PhD degree in mathematics. He
failed his interview leading up to his degree because his professors were
asking him questions from introductory texts. He refused to give them the
simplistic answers that they wanted, explaining problems with the approach that
the introductory texts were taking.
