>US Army's transformation into an amazingly lifelike replica of the
Wehrmacht<

besides invading Iraq, how is the US Army like the Wehrmacht?

Cf., "Besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?"

I don't find Nazi analogies to be very useful.

You have plenty of company there unfortunately. General disinclination to wake up and smell the Fascism is one reason the antiwar movement has sputtered.

I don't make the Wehrmacht comparison casually. Clips that I have seen of
German newsreels during the Third Reich typically show deep public reverence
for a military that is brutalizing foreign civilian populations in acts of
naked, unjustifiable national aggression. Bingo -- that's the USA and its
military today to a T. The media and pliable, ostrich-like public have
conjoined to "define deviancy down" (as Daniel Patrick Moynihan said in a
different context) and make the indefensible seem normal. What kind of a
country is it where people turn giddy with glee and plaster their cars with
Support Our Troops ribbons when their "boys and girls" have committed
Fallujah-cide -- obliterating an entire city and driving its population into
homelessness and destitution?

Yes, today's USA would be a serious contender indeed in any Nazi look-alike
contest.
