As you know, GM is out to take back health care benefits from its workers, as much as possible, to get out of the financial hole that it has dug itself. GM's offensive presents the UAW with a choice (at a moment when organized labor itself stands at a crossroads due to the split): should it negotiate with GM on degrees of takebacks or should it attempt to put the urgent need for national health care on the political agenda? If the UAW takes the former course, GM might do what United did to its workers, taking back not just health care benefits but also pensions and everything else. Time to fight back while the union still has power!
