You're ignoring the subscription price. Hard drives are getting cheaper faster than TIVO is. I saw a deal this week-end for a 160 gig, $39.95 after rebates.
I just bought a nifty TV tuner card (Hauppage, 150 PVR) ($80) for the Univac. Plug a cable box into that baby and you can record all you like. Get a DVD burner and you can make your own copies, play 'em on a $30 DVD player hooked up to the teevee. I haven't tried to duplicate a commercial DVD yet, cuz that would be wrong. Ditto immoral downloading of movies over a fast broadband connection. I believe there are set-top boxes sold over the Internets that do what TIVO does, with no subscription fee. I'm not sure if you can record directly off a cable feed with a DVD recorder.
