We practice on ourselves and assume the rest of the 
world will respond similarly to the same stimuli when 
repressed/suppressed/oppressed/rejected/selected....

That's why we (the "middle" of america) always seem so 
amazed when our nasty little wars don't turn out as planned.

I live with a S. African expat who grew up in California.
He marvels that the walls are all so high, the razor wire is 
so much sharper, and there's none of that pesky apparatus 
of the police state visibly present. (yet)
