We practice on ourselves and assume the rest of the world will respond similarly to the same stimuli when repressed/suppressed/oppressed/rejected/selected.... That's why we (the "middle" of america) always seem so amazed when our nasty little wars don't turn out as planned. I live with a S. African expat who grew up in California. He marvels that the walls are all so high, the razor wire is so much sharper, and there's none of that pesky apparatus of the police state visibly present.
