Ulhas: > > > What were life expectancies in Cuba in 1959?

I quoted:
> the full commitment to health care by the state, the planned economy,
> In 1959 the infant mortality rate was 60/1000
> live births and life expectancy was 65.1 years.

Ulhas:
Life expectancy in India has improved from 35 to 65 in 50 years.

that was mostly during the "socialist" period (before neo-liberalism),
wasn't it? or when was it? and isn't 50 years longer than the period
since 1959 (the Cuban revolution), the original period of comparison
that you wanted to look at?

BTW, I don't think anyone was saying that Cuba is better than India.
It's not like there's a competition going on. Obviously, they face
different challenges, with India's been harder in many cases. But here
goes.

according the the UN World Health Organization,
Life expectancy in India at birth is currently 60.0/63.0 years. (male / female)

Healthy life expectancy in India at birth in 2002: 53.3/53.6 years (male/female)
(source: http://www.who.int/countries/ind/en/)

for Cuba, similar stats:
Life expectancy at birth m/f (years): 75.0/79.0

Healthy life expectancy at birth m/f (years, 2002): 67.1/69.5
(source: http://www.who.int/countries/cub/en/)

("Healthy life expectancy (HALE) is based on life expectancy (LEX),
but includes an adjustment for time spent in poor health. This
indicator measures the equivalent number of years in full health that
a newborn child can expect to live based on the current mortality
rates and prevalence distribution of health states in the
population.")
