Why DIDN'T George the Elder push on to Baghdad? Wiping out Saddam and his Sunni support base would mean handing the country to the Shi'ites (read Iran/ read Ayatollahs/ ... and more power to Hizbollah) peeing off the Saudis and other client states/ vassals.
It would equally hand the country to the Kurds, peeing off five other countries struggling with what to do about Kurdish aspirations, especially Turkey, single 'non-Christian', non-European NATO member. Home rule for the Kurds would only fan the hopes of the myriad peoples aspiring to statehood in the much-aching underbelly of the ever-so-delicate, must-be-accommodated Russia, already battling with minority aspirations in Chechenya etc. Rui
