the question of crop rotation would surely have been rather academic in countries where rice was the staple grain, as a) crops other than rice do not grow in paddies and b) the annual flooding of the paddies would replace the soil, meaning that crop rotation would be pointless as the problem it was meant to solve (the depletion of the soil) would not exist.
