I agree with Carrol. I think that the key debate is between the
subjectivist or idealist interpretation, in which the "passions" are
primary, and the materialist one (of Marx), where the objective
structures and dynamics of the currently-dominant mode of production
determines which passions are given the biggest role, which are
rewarded and cultivated.
