according to the traditional family values crowd, the biological
distinction between males and females is "natural," and essential to
civilization as we know it, yadda yadda. But a small number of babies
(one in a million?) are born who have both sets of sexual equipment
(i.e., are hermaphrodites). Until recently, the obstetricians
delivering the babies would then decide (with consent of the parents?)
which sex the kid should be and do the appropriate snipping.

But isn't that kind of operation unnatural? what's a traditional
family values person to do?
