This is a problem you Americans have to deal with, I guess. My personal history is not the history of the US but the history of the Ottoman Empire, although most of my friends say, no you are not Ottoman, you are Turkish. Rubbish, of course: I am no more Turkish than I am Greek or Kurdish or Arabic or Armenian or what have you. I am mostly Tartar and Circassian, among other things. Where do you think my slanted eyes come from? How about my curly hair, if I did not have any African heritage? You see, there is a wide world out there, and it goes way beyond the US.
