in today's LA TIMES, it's reported that in South Carolina to register as a candidate in the GOP presidential primary you must pay $35,000. On the other hand, to enter the Dem primary, you must pay $2,500 or provide 3,000 signatures on your petition.
these numbers are revealing (if they are similar in other states). The Dems are more plebeian, making it less expensive to run. Further, if you lack the gelt, you can get signatures.
