South Africa's national police commissioner has resigned as the
president of Interpol after prosecutors said he is to face corruption
charges.

In a case that has rocked the ruling African National Congress, Jackie
Selebi, a leading party member, is accused of taking payoffs from a
notorious criminal.

He said he was giving up his Interpol post because he did not want the
allegations "to bring the good work of this august body into
disrepute".

He added that he had been given an "extended leave of absence" from
his duties as national police chief "so that I can devote my energies
to clearing my name".

According to a draft indictment seen by The Daily Telegraph,
prosecutors believe Selebi was paid a minimum of around £100,000 over
18 months by Glenn Agliotti, a convicted drug smuggler who has been
charged with the murder of Brett Kebble, the mining magnate.

The prosecution says that the two men had a "generally corrupt
relationship" and went on shopping trips together, with Agliotti
paying for Selebi's purchases and even buying gifts for the
policeman's wife and girlfriend.

Chequebook stubs from an account used by Agliotti to pay Selebi were
marked "Cash Cop".

Selebi, 57, allegedly returned the favours by tipping off Agliotti
whenever British Customs sent South African police one of their five
reports naming him as a suspect in drug-smuggling activities.
