JOHOR BARU: Kampung Padang Pak Amat in Pasir Puteh may be a little known
village in Kelantan but it has produced two of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s
(UTM) best students.
At the university’s 35th convocation ceremony, Mohammad Nasrol Mat Nasir, 22,
received one of the two Royal Education Awards, while Mariyana Aida Abdul
Kadir, 23, was conferred the Chancellor’s Award.
“We have only just found out we're from the same village. We did not know each
other before,” said Mariyana, a civil engineering graduate who would be
pursuing her Masters degree at the Pavia Rose School in Italy.
Her mother, Hasnah Che Din, 63, was unable to hold back tears as she watched
her youngest daughter receive the prestigious award.
TOP STUDENTS: Wong and Nasrol, recipients of the Royal Education Award,
showing off their medals at UTM’s 35th convocation ceremony in Johor Baru,
Saturday.
Nasrol, who studied human resources development, said he was keen to join the
diplomatic service.
“I’m reporting for work as a general administrative officer on Monday at the
National Institute of Public Administration (Intan) in Kluang,” said Nasrol who
aims to be an ambassador for the country one day.
The other recipient of the Royal Education Award is national chess player Wong
Zi Jing, 23, who graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering
(aeronautics).
Wong said he would fly off to Daejon in South Korea to pursue a Masters degree
at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
Industrial mathematics graduate Deborah Lim Shin Fei, 22, another recipient of
the Chancellor’s Award, said she had begun her Masters programme in mathematics
in UTM.
A total of 5,232 students are receiving their scrolls during the three-day
convocation which ends tomorrow.
Johor Sultanah Zanariah Almarhum Tunku Ahmad, who conferred the degrees and
doctorates to 751 graduates yesterday, said the knowledge acquired by the
students would empower them to be innovative and invent new technologies.
