Immigration authorities are checking up on reports that about 130 Muslims in
several districts of Narathiwat have sought refuge in neighbouring Malaysia.

Pol Col Thikhamporn Kaewkhao, chief of the immigration checkpoint in
Narathiwat's Sungai Kolok district, said he would contact the Thai consular
office in Kotabaru, the capital of Kelantan state, about the matter.

The checks follow reports by Thai security sources coordinating with Malaysia
that the group yesterday crossed the border to Kelantan, claiming they feared
for their lives in their province.

The Thai consular office in Kotabaru has sent officials to take care of the
Muslims, mostly from Sungai Padi and Tak Bai districts, the source said.

Meanwhile, three rubber tappers were shot dead and four others, including two
teachers, were wounded in separate gun and bomb attacks in the deep South.

Prasit Songserm, 44, was shot dead and his wife Saengduen, 38, seriously
wounded in an attack early yesterday morning as they were about to leave their
house about 3.30am in Bannang Sata district of Yala to travel to their rubber
tree plantation.

Mr Prasit was hit in the chest and died on the spot while his wife was shot in
the right arm. One of the attackers also used a hard object to beat her and she
suffered head injuries.

About an hour later, another couple, Jarae Chummiksa, 55, and his wife Im, 52,
were ambushed by at least two armed men who were hiding in a plantation in
Narathiwat's Rangae district.

In the same province, a bomb targeting soldiers providing protection for
teachers went off in Sungai Padi district around 8am, wounding Vorn Ma-injorn,
54, a teacher at Ban Buerangae School.

A short time later, Pvt Samorn Amartmontri, 22, sustained shrapnel wounds to
his chest and neck in a bomb attack in Sungai Padi district.

In Songkhla's Chana district , Manop Thiamkawe, a 35-year-old teacher, was shot
and seriously wounded about 9am yesterday in a gun attack by two men on a
motorcycle.//Bangkokpost 1 Sept 05
