TANAH MERAH: The Housing and Local Government Ministry is reviving the campaign to grow the national flower in all housing estates around the country. To jump-start the campaign, 48,000 bunga raya (hibiscus) plants will be planted nationwide by the middle of this month with the help of the respective local authorities, Deputy Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said. She said planting the hibiscus widely would reflect patriotism and foster an appreciation of landscaping among the people. Awareness of the hibiscus has been on the wane lately. In fact, the flower comes in 300 species, which can be grown in gardens, she said after launching the Plant the Hibiscus campaign for Kelantan on Tuesday at the Tanah Merah District Council field. Also present were state Local Government Committee chairman Takiyuddin Hassan, district council president Mohd Azamli Jamaluddin and Tanah Merah MP Shaari Hassan. Azizah said the ministrys target was for each housing estate in the country to have a hibiscus park and for every office to have a corner devoted to the flower. Besides enhancing landscaping, this will also brighten up the surroundings. Takiyuddin, a PAS central committee member, said the party wanted to work with all political parties, including Umno, to maintain cleanliness in Kelantan. He said irrespective of political affiliation, all parties should come together to emphasise the need for cleanliness. Everyone wants to stay in a clean place including litterbugs, who throw litter elsewhere but not in their own homes. We must stop such practices since Kelantan has a reputation for having dirty areas, he said. Takiyuddin added that the local authorities wanted to make cleanliness a priority for the state.//Thestar 8 Sept
