Declaration Of Kota Baharu As Islamic City Regarded Meaningless
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- Deputy Information Minister Datuk Zainuddin Maidin said Tuesday the declaration of the Kota Baharu Municipal Council as an Islamic city on Oct 1 by the PAS-ruled Kelantan Government would be meaningless. "The declaration will be meaningless because the country itself is an Islamic nation," he told a press conference after the launch of the documentary "Syahadah" at the P. Ramlee Auditorium in Wisma Radio, Angkasapuri, here. Zainuddin said he hoped that the declaration would enable Kota Baharu to be cleaner than other cities in Malaysia, in accordance with the Islamic image that it wanted to portray. "We see that Kelantan is already far behind in terms of development and education compared to other states which had long achieved Islamic status under the leadership of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad," he said. He also said that Terengganu was now seen as having achieved progress more rapidly than Kelantan. "Syahadah" is a 33-episode special documentary produced by Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) with the objective of portraying the glory of Islamic civilisation. The documentary is also aimed at studying and understanding the Islam Hadhari (Civilisational Islam) model and to instil awareness of current issues among the Islamic community. The 30-minute programme will be aired over TV1 at 6.30 pm during the month of Ramadhan, beginning from Oct 4. The programme will take viewers on a tour of locations in 13 countries, including Cambodia, Thailand, Yemen, Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia. Six "umrah" packages are being offered by Utas Travel Sdn Bhd to winners of a quiz contest to be held for the duration of the documentary.//Bernama __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
