Fashion show and concert for women make debut in Kelantan

KOTA BARU: Kelantan women watched in rapt attention as models paraded fashionable Muslim attire, complete with headscarves, on a catwalk in the first all-women's fashion show at a hotel here.

There was another first for the Kelantanese women, too.

In the state where women artistes are banned from performing because their voices are considered haram (forbidden), Waheeda, a tudung-clad female singer, sang three of her songs at the show.

Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat’s wife Datin Tuan Sabariah Tuan Ishak was the guest of honour.

“I’m really honoured. It’s a big thing for me to perform before them,” said Waheeda yesterday after the show.

Asked whether she would like to have an open concert in Kelantan like Mawi did over the weekend, she replied: “No, not yet.”

“Well, I would not know how the public would react. There might be some fanatics,” she said.

At yesterday’s show, she sang her hits Salamat, Cinta and Binafsha.

Many of the women came forward later to have their photographs taken with her.

The show was organised by the PAS-led state government in conjunction with its declaration of

Kota Baru as an Islamic City on Saturday.

Fashion designers Datin Melor Wati Darus of Melor Apparels, Habibah Yaacob of Benang Kapas and the models were flown in from Kuala Lumpur to showcase Muslim female fashion.

Proper female Muslim attire, said Melor, could be stylish, colourful with trendy cuts and consistent with the requirements of the religion.

“I stress on women looking beautiful for themselves,” she said.

Her pieces range from RM60 to RM1,000.

Her clients included Waheeda and artistes such as Wardina, Jeslina and Rynna.

Habibah specialises in traditional heritage Malay clothes and her clients include royalty and artistes.

Her pieces range from RM200 to RM7,000.

The Kelantanese ladies seemed to be having a good time at the show as the models paraded the designs before them.

Some discussed the cuts, passed comments, smiled and giggled at unusual looking apparel.

Eliani Nik Nawi, 42, an education professional, dispelled the notion that Kelantanese women were behind in fashion.

“We in Kelantan have always been very fashionable. At home, we are much more glamorous and sexy. We don’t go around in sarongs. We wear tank tops and parios!” she added.  //Thestar 4 Oct
