KOTA BARU: Kelantan is bracing for a possible rise in dengue cases in the state from the Raya balik kampung exodus.
State public health department director Datuk Dr Ahmad Razin Ahmad Mahir urged those working outstation to seek medical attention if they have a fever.
He also appealed to drivers to ensure their vehicles were disinfected at the start of travel to Kelantan as the disease-bearing Aedes mosquitoes could hitch rides aboard thousands of vehicles heading here.
Private clinics were also directed to be sensitive to patients complaining of fever in view of the outbreak.
Thousands of Kelantanese, who work predominantly in the west coast and the Klang Valley, are expected to return home to celebrate Hari Raya Adilfitri and Deepavali early next month.
Public cooperation is vital. A dengue outbreak cannot be underestimated, although the state has faced such cases previously. Prevention is still better than cure, he said.
The state has generally recorded lower cases this year, compared with last year, with 53 cases in the last 39 weeks and no deaths.
In view of the upcoming rainy season, the enforcement division will step up its vigilance. So far, RM36,000 in compounds have been collected this year from owners of 564 building, including government and school blocks, while 92 warnings were issued, he said.
The government buildings and schools were penalised for allowing their premises and surroundings to become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Declining to name the government buildings or schools, Dr Ahmad Razin said the caretakers of such buildings should raise their vigilance as their occupants were civil servants and schoolchildren.
Pre-schools will also be checked extensively, he said.
Dr Ahmad Razin said the public must maintain cleanliness at all times with cooperation of the local authorities as it was one positive measure to prevent a severe outbreak here. //Thestar 12 Oct
