KOTA BAHARU, Oct 13 -- Snooker and billiard may make a legal comeback to Kelantan in December this year -- as a sport -- after being banned when PAS came to power in 1990.

State executive councillor for local government, housing and health Takiyuddin Hassan said the two types of games would be removed from the Entertainment and Entertainment Places Enactment 1993 as prohibited activities to allow them to again be played legally in the state.

"We expect the proposal to term snooker and billiard as a sport, and not entertainment, would get the approval of the State Exco by December," he said in commenting on the action of Kota Kinabalu Municipal Counci (MPKB) officers in stopping a "training session" at the Kelantan Snooker and Billiard Association's centre in a supermarket at 2.30pm, Thursday.

Until the law was changed, no snooker or billiard would be permitted, he said.

Three officers of MPKB ordered the association to close the centre and threatened to seize the game tables and accessories if it refused to comply.

The officers also issued a summon to the association.

Association secretary Hu Pang Chaw said MPKB should not have taken the action as it possessed an approval certificate issued by the Youth and Sports Ministry in September 2004.

"The officers also chased out nine association members who were training for a competition to be held soon in Kuala Lumpur," he said.

Today's raid on the association's premises is the second by the council's officers after the first in June.

Takiyuddin said the association did not obtain a licence from MPKB.

"Until the prohibition is lifted, the government will continue to act firmly in this matter," he said.//Bernama
