If your goal is to improve boot time, then the fewer items that are 
installed the better.  So instead of using an entire distribution of the 
OS load what is minimal.  You'll have trade offs on what is available 
for you to use and features.

Also boot time has alot to do with what hardware you are configured on.  
How much storage, how many scsi cards, fibre channel cards, network 
cards and memory.  Knowing some of these configurations you might be 
able to modify somethings to decrease boot times.

As far as disabling services, that is a whole study of itself.
