What can I do to debug this situation ? Is there a possibility to enforce a 
particular PMU model, for example by direct usage of the library ?

out of curiosity, can you send your /proc/cpuinfo file?  The important
info is the family/model/stepping info.  Until recently the various perf
counter implementations had slightly different support for the various
Nehalem EX models and one of them might have fallen through the cracks.
