We built Perl 5.8.0 on OS/390 2.10 and z/OS 1.2 and TCPIP sockets will not
work on either build.  TCPIP works just fine on both of these systems using
Perl 5.6.1.  I also have my doubts about 5.8.

I can't answer your question, but I will note that we had problems
compiling and installing 5.8 here on an MP-RAS machine. (MP-RAS is an
oddball version of Unix svr5 sold by NCR.) We are sticking with 5.6.1.
