Really, *every* mailing list has kind of these mail storms on any random topic from time to time. And it *is* perl qa, in the end. And it is *really not really* a problem to skip/hide a whole thread, technologically or simply visually. There are much more things that I would consider frustrating before I would tell a motivated and helpful subgroup of people that they should please play in the other corner over there for a while.
