I'd recommend Matt Wright's code -- it has many pedagogical uses:

  * demonstrating how working with Perl rather than against it can make
    code much simpler and easier to understand (by taking a section of
    his code and rewriting it)

  * practising reading badly-written code by other people

  * showing how not thinking about security can make programs vulnerable
    to sundry nasty things

  * pointing out that being widely-recommended is not the same as being
    right

No Perl course is complete if it doesn't mention Matt Wright!

[Um ... I was actually joking when I started writing the above, but now
I'm not so sure.  Certainly "avoid Matt's Script Archive" is something
that it is useful for Perl programmers to know, so maybe he is worth a
mention ...]
