I feel it would be a useful thing to have in standard Encode the description of what shift encodings, escape encodings and the other jargon means, and how they work (which seemed to be the start of Encode::Guide). It can be quite hard to follow what the various hoops the different encoding systems are forced to jump through, when one only knows languages which use the Roman alphabet and therefore has had no direct experience of anything other than ASCII and ISO 8859-1.
