I got it working thanks to help from Jez.  I had accidentally commented out
the Win32::GUI::DoEvents() line.  Doh...

Sorry if this question sounds dumb, but what version of Win32GUI 
are you using?  I remember trying the splash screen example with 
the version of Win32GUI that installs from ActiveState, and the 
example didn't work.  I made a minor adjustment to the code and it 
worked.  Once I upgrade to the latest version of Win32GUI, the 
example worked without any modification at all.
