>From a Perl programmer in crisis :-) ,

I recently managed to talk my project leader into using Perl as the
development tool for our project. All went well for a few weeks until
my project leader met some "boffins" from an internet application
development company who then said that Perl was a load of rubbish and
Php on Linux was far better. This sent my project-leader into a tail-spin
and now my contract is in jeopardy because we might lose perl, and ergo my
newly found Perl skills will not be needed.

The application is a commercial package consisting of Payroll+HR.
It is written in Delphi. I was hired to suggest an internet solution.
I suggested Perl. The existing windows package is already very successful
and we must cater for very high volumes of hits. It is therefore a given
that some sort of Unix base must be sought. Company standards dictates that
the database is Oracle.

My big worry is Perl Vs Php.

Since we are in South Africa, it also happens that there are not many
Perl programmers here. My project leader therefore sees this as a great
big negative. I of course countered that Perl is easy to learn but that
had no effect. (I'm sure there are even less Php programmers around - but
she may choose to subcontract this company of boffins...).

The real issues are performance, and support and speed of development.

I've never heard of PHP before but I saw a simple benchmark ("hello
world") where Php seemed to definitely outperform Perl.

Can anyone make any recommendations, suggestions (point to benchmarks),
etc which may enable me to get the project back on a Perl footing? Also,
security is a major concern. Any thoughts there on Php vs Perl? How
new is Php?

Thanks,
Jan
