I'll point out here that I, for one, don't mind people deciding to head out
and do a port/reimplement/rewrite on their own. I won't promise that your
work (whoever you are in that sentence) will go into the 'official' perl
implementation, though I won't nick code from anyone without permission.

This is software, and fundamentally unimportant. (I have kids--they give a
certain sense of perspective, though that could just be the sleep
deprivation... :) I want to build the best perl I can, though that doesn't
mean that I'm the best person to build perl. I really don't have my ego
wrapped up in it, and I'd hope that other folks feel the same about it.
