Currying placeholders are scalars, so you want:
@sum = @{reduce (@^total, ^x+^y ), [], @a };
More and more I lean towards a scalar-only reduce.
Simpler semantics and you can always ref a L(OL(OL(OL...etc.))) if you need
multidimensionals.
