Forgot the parens on the right side, there:
($a, $b, $c) = (1,2,3);

[$a, $b, $c] = (1,2,3) => still an error
Just to flesh it out:
[$a, $b, $c] = [1,2,3] => still an error
($a, $b, $c) = [1,2,3] => not an error; $a is [1,2,3],
$b and $c undef.
