I personally think that “handle” in computing is most likely related to “door 
handles” and the like, and *not* the meaning of a name or nickname, which is 
totally unrelated, I think.
A handle is something you use to grasp i.e. use an object – without it, a door 
is useless, though it’s still there.
In the same way, a handle in computing is some stored reference (in the loose 
sense of the word) that lets you use or interact with an object, like a file.  
Without the handle, the object may still be there, but you can’t “get to it”.
Just my 2 cents.
