It might be simpler to add a skip block around that
specific test for whatever version of 5.8.x that
has that bug...

I keep forgetting to mention it .... my perl 5.8.0 contains a bug that
causes it to report that nan == nan.
Consequently test 29 of t/pdl_from_string.t fails for that particular
build of perl.
It's quite likely that there are other 5.8.x builds of perl out there in
the wild that would report the same error.
Maybe it's time we started thinking about removing our support for 5.8.0 -
which wouldn't necessarily rule out still supporting (say) 5.8.8 (or 5.8.9)
onwards.
