1999 International Conference
http://www.sba.muohio.edu/abas/

Program Theme:
Globalization & Emerging Economies

Submission Deadline: February 27, 1999

Barcelona, Spain
July 12-14, 1999

 ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
As we enter the new millennium, organizations and economies are increasingly finding
it necessary to expand into the global environment and to increase their base, not
only in inputs and outputs, but in skills and systems as well. Globalization has
brought in its wake new questions and issues for scholars and practitioners of
Business and Administrative Sciences.

Globalization in the context of Emerging Economies is a theme of extraordinary scope
well suited to the present world order characterized by a borderless world and an
on-going search for the proper balance between nationalism and globalism. This
dynamic has found expression in economic, organizational, social, political, and
cultural upheavals at the micro and macro levels. As we enter the new millennium, it
is difficult to think of a topic more worthy of a sustained and enduring intellectual
dialogue.

Thus the 1999 International Conference of the Academy of Business and Administrative
Sciences will focus on Globalization and Emerging Economies. This conference will
bring together leaders from business, government, and academia from all over the
world--both the developed and developing economies--to discuss and share ideas and to
work together to meet the challenges of the emerging world order.

CONFERENCE VENUE
The conference will be held at Barcelona Plaza Hotel, situated in the business hub of
Barcelona, in front of the Barcelona Trade Fair and Convention Center in the Monjuich
area where most of the Olympics venues are also located. The hotel also has a Health
Club with swimming pool, sauna, and solarium at the disposal of guests. The
conference will take place in the Gran Salon and other Meeting Rooms of the hotel.
Additional conference facilities will be available as needed.

CONFERENCE LANGUAGE
The conference will be conducted in English.

TOPICS
Proposals for presentations, panel symposia, and workshops are invited in the
following areas. Related topics in line with the theme of the conference will also be
considered.

Presentations are scheduled for 25 minutes and must be made by an individual speaker.
Panel symposia are three or more related presentations by different speakers and must
be proposed by the lead speaker. In the case of presentations involving a
significant experiential component, a workshop proposal would be appropriate.

Submission of a proposal implies a commitment to register for and attend the 1999 ABAS
International Conference. The maximum number of roles (as presenter, author, session
chair, or symposium panelist) for any given individual is three.

Country-Specific and Region-Specific topics covering the emerging economies of Asia
Pacific region, Africa, Western Europe, Eastern and Central Europe, Middle East, and
Latin America are of particular interest to the conference delegates. Equally
relevant are topics examining the role and experiences of developed economies such as

ABOUT BARCELONA, SPAIN
Barcelona, Spain's leading industrial and commercial center, is one of the most
exciting, exhilarating, dynamic, and artistic cities both inside and outside of
Europe. With a rich cultural legacy of different civilizations as well as strong
links to the geniuses of Pablo Picasso, Antoni Gaud, and Joan Mir, Barcelona has
emerged as a foremost destination for culture, tourism, conventions, arts, and
entertainment. Situated like an open window overlooking the Mediterranean, Barcelona
offers a confluence of economic dynamism, industrial muscle, intellectual
effervescence, business acumen, and a remarkable mix of modern conveniences and
traditional hospitality.

TRAVELING TO BARCELONA
Barcelona is easily accessible from all over the world by plane and train.
Participants should inquire from their travel agency or the nearest Spanish
Embassy/consulate as to the requirement of a visa.

The International airport, El Prat de Llobregat, is situated approximately 9 miles
from the city. A train service is available to the Barcelona Central (Sants) station
every 30 minutes. The Aerobus service operates between the airport and Plaza
Catalunya every 15 minutes. Yellow-and-black taxis equipped with official meters are
also available.

CLIMATE
Barcelona enjoys a mild climate, quite appropriately described as "Mediterranean."
Summers are quite pleasant and visitors may enjoy a beautifully warm and sunny weather
in July with an average temperature of 250 C/780 F. Occasional rains, however, are
not unusual in July. Evenings are generally bright until 9 PM.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Public transport in Barcelona is well organized with a choice of metro, city buses,
and taxis. Cable car, Montjuic Funicular (a cog rail road), and harbor boats are also
available between specific destinations for special trips.

INSURANCE
ABAS cannot accept any responsibility or liability for losses or damages of any type
to conference delegates or their companions either during or as a direct or indirect
result of the conference. All delegates and companions are advised to check their own
personal insurance provisions and obtain any additional coverages as desired.
